In the past, he spent research periods in universities such as the University of Essex, Tilburg University, and University of California at Berkeley, among others. His main research interests are in the field of Education, Labor, Population and Health Economics. He wrote extensively on female labor force participation and fertility decisions, the economic and health returns to education, and the determinants and consequences of educational choices. His work has been published in journals such as Journal of Health Economics, Health Economics, Journal of Population Economics, Economics of Education Review, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society – Series A, among others. He is currently on leave at the European Commission Joint Research Centre (Ispra, Italy) until August 2018.
