Francesco Guala

Francesco Guala is Professor of Economics at the University of Milan. After obtaining his Ph.D. at the London School of Economics, he has taught for a decade at the University of Exeter.

In 2009 he returned to Italy thanks to an Anti-Brain-Drain scholarship awarded by the Italian Ministry of Higher Education. Francesco works on conceptual and methodological issues in economics and social science, using theoretical and experimental tools. In 2001 he has won the prize of the International Network of Economic Method and the European History of Economics Award, both for the best article written by a young scholar. At the moment he is primarily interested in the foundations of (social) preference theories, coordination, and the cognitive underpinning of institutions. Francesco’s work has appeared in major international journals in economics, psychology, and philosophy. He is the author of four books, including The Methodology of Experimental Economics (Cambridge University Press, 2005) and Understanding Institutions: The Science and Philosophy of Living Together (Princeton University Press, 2016).
